THE FUTURE OF CANADA AND THE CBC

Summary for Convenience: This paper contends that Canada must chart its own course in contending with critcal issues, like the advent of global warming, regardless of pressures and interests from outside our borders. It also asserts that the media in Canada is dominated by private, for-profit, corporate interests and wealth family companies. The need for media balance and for a not-for-profit public broadcaster, i.e., a recast CBC, working for the common good and advancing the civil society, is presented. It is proposed to place the governance of this renewed CBC directly in the hands of the people of Canada through a Governing Council (GC) of at least sixty Canadians. Disgraceful under funding of CBC is addressed. Ten priorities are listed for a renewed, public interest CBC.
Intent of This Paper: SALT wants the Parliament of Canada to draft and pass a law establishing a renewed CBC as outlined in this paper.
